The classic bodybuilder outfit has traditionally been weight lifting clothes, up until the introduction of muscle fit shirts. But once outside the gym, what do they opt for? Particularly if it’s a formal event. Options for formalwear for swole, v shaped bodybuilders have been very limited - until now. Muscle fit clothing manufacturers have jumped on this growing demand and responded with muscle fit shirts or skinny shirts but still fail to grasp the unique shape of a bodybuilder.
Filling a void in the life of bodybuilders is our aspiration at Tapered Menswear. The void of bodybuilders seeking dress shirts that are proportional, muscular fitted and functional.
As a bodybuilder you are gifted with a desire for perfection. It takes an unlimited amount of dedication and sacrifice to perfect your craft whether it’s in bodybuilding, olympic lifting or competitive sports. But as the body adapts to these improvements, the difficulty to find clothing to fit your unique body shape increases exponentially.
The traditional high street retailer fails to recognise this shape. And all that hard work and sacrifice to create this aesthetic, v tapered torso is simply ignored in off the rack shirts. Not only the shape of the shirt but comfort is also sacrificed.
Bodybuilders have it tough, they can either size up or size down. When they put on an ill fitting shirt it can immediately transform the confidence attained through years of hard work.
What size shirts do bodybuilders wear?
The sizing for most off the rack shirts differs vastly. You will find that most bodybuilders are wearing a 3XL upwards but the issue with this is that it will unlikely fit proportionally to their V-Taper physique. A couple of tactics a bodybuilder can opt for in traditional shirt fitting is the following:
This might sound obvious, the shirt will be more fitted. While this is exactly what a bodybuilder will want around the waist and arms, you will be achieving gaping holes at the chest as well as difficulty to move!
Mass produced shirts don’t take into consideration that some people need tall and slimmer fitting, while some need short and slim-fitting, or tall and standard-fitting, or any other possible combination of sizes and fits. The issue is that people aren’t all the same size, and the way they compensate for this is to group things into categories (the sizes we shop for).
Don't size down - choose Tapered for a perfect fit
Go to a tailor
Another option is to find a shirt that fits relatively well and take the shirt to a local tailor.
All a tailor needs to do is put darts in the back of the shirt. What’s a dart? Simply put, a dart is a seam that’s sewn into the back of a shirt to remove excess material. Each dart will take away around 1.5cm of material, meaning you’ll lose around 3cm of the waistline of the shirt. Darts are designed to work with the V-shaped taper of a man’s torso. They start just below the armpit seam of the shirt, are widest around your middle, and then flare open slightly towards the bottom of the shirt so you can still get them on.
This will achieve a fitted look but also comes at a price and time waiting for your shirt to be tailored.
What shirts do bodybuilders wear?
Realistically, neither of these options are particularly helpful. Either they’re expensive, time-consuming, temporary, or all of the above. Trying to work with your existing clothes, or with the commonly available fits and sizes, is really not your best option. So what’s a bodybuilder to do? Instead of looking at how to make a shirt tighter around the waist.
If this sounds familiar, we hear you. It’s time for a change, bodybuilders should be rewarded for their ambition to show off their physique.
"I have struggled for 15 years to find shirts that fit my bodybuilder physique. These fit me like a glove"
Imagine a shirt that fits bodybuilders without being too tight at the shoulders or too loose at the waist. Imagine not struggling each time you shop for your muscular physique. Imagine being able to spend more time at the gym and less time (and money) at the tailors. The perfect dress shirts for an athletic build.
In 2017 we did just that and re-imagined the traditional dress shirt to bring you our exclusive TAPERED™ fit shirts. Our need to help you find a perfectly fitted shirt was born out of our own struggles. Like you, we struggled to find physique-enhancing, proportional dress shirts that are ready to perform and ready to wear.
We don’t compromise on quality or style either which is why our TAPERED™ fit shirts are crafted from the finest stretch cotton materials. With a subtle logo on the wrist and details on the buttons, our shirts are elegant, sophisticated and the result of extreme attention to detail.
❌ Boxy off the rack slim fit shirts that creates pooling at the waist
❌ Heavy, restrictive fabrics causing discomfort and stiffness
❌ Squeezing into a shirt too small with buttons ready to pop
❌ Expensive and time consuming tailoring just to get a shirt to fit your form.
